GRAMMY U Members pose with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco

On December 10, 2012 The Recording Academy – San Francisco Chapter hosted a GRAMMY U - SoundCheck event with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. Following a half-hour long sound check, where they saw Ben “Macklemore” Haggerty’s funny side, students gathered into the poster room with the artists and their manager for an intimate Q&A session.

The artists introduced themselves and students briefly learned the history of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s rise from being struggling artists to gaining mainstream popularity via social media. Students learned about the hardships of life on the road, how hip hop can cause positive changes for society, and the benefits of thrift shopping. Ryan Lewis also spoke on the development of his production style and how his experience playing guitar in bands taught him the importance of song structure.

Members posed with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for a group picture and said their goodbyes. Students walked away with an unforgettable experience and advice that they can apply to their own music careers. A big thank you to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and their team for making this event possible
