On Friday February 1, 2013 GRAMMY U members in Honolulu were given a behind the scenes tour of Island Sound Studios, one of the premier recording studios on the island of Oahu. Members were given a rare inside look at how the large ocean side facility has been the host to its larger than life clientele.

The tour was lead by studio manager and engineer Gaylord Holomalia, who led the the tour of the studio while sharing his experiences from an operational stand point. Students were led through the two master studios and multiple isolation rooms while Gaylord shared about the studio’s history, what it takes to run it, and of course all the eye candy gear that is required to make it all happen.

The tour concluded with a Q&A session where Gaylord imparted his decades of insight (as a Studio Manager, engineer and as keyboard player for legendary Hawaiian band, Kalapana) to the current audio engineering and music business students stating, “as an audio engineer it would be best to understand the business side of music..” and advising to “diversify yourself”, meaning to expand into different aspects of music as well as honing their skills in on their craft.

Students were offered a chance to play some of their own work over the house monitor system. GRAMMY U member and audio engineer student, Jarett Lapitian stated, “Being able to step inside a studio where many big names have worked was definitely a great experience, and very inspiring as well”. Students left the event with increased knowledge on how to become a part of the music industry in Honolulu.
