Composer

How/When did you get your start? What was your big break?

I was doing a lot of ghost writing for various TV composers when I started working for Patrick Williams. He had a weekly series, got too busy, and turned it over to me.  I earned my first of 7 Emmy nominations.

What was the most interesting experience you’ve had while working?

Listening to Natalie Cole sing along with me as I rehearsed the orchestra for her CD "Still Unforgettable."

Who is the most interesting person you’ve worked with and why?

I learned a lot from Mike Post.  He could walk into a room and charm anyone!  To me he exemplified the word "winner."  I found myself asking, in any given situation, "How would Mike handle this?"

Who is someone you would like to work with and why?

Sting.  He is my favorite contemporary songwriter.  His music and lyrics are always completely inventive, original, and interesting harmonically, in a way that most pop music never allows itself to be.

What is your favorite piece of equipment and why?

My piano. You can't fake the truth without gizmos.

What book would you recommend as a must read for someone and why?

The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand.  Every artist must have integrity and the courage of their convictions the way Howard Roark did.

Growing up, which artists inspired you the most?

Bill Evans

Claus Ogerman

Jobim

Johnny Mandel

What are your “secrets to success?”

Find people who have what you want, and ask them how they got it. Try to find some way to connect with your musical heroes.

What’s your favorite restaurant/taco truck?

Lucques, at the bar.

Favorite sightseeing/tourist attraction?

The beaches.

What can you not live without professionally and personally?

The respect of my peers, and the love of my family.
