The Recording Academy Florida Chapter & P&E Wing presented GRAMMY GPS: A Roadmap For Today's Music Biz on May 3 at the Gibson Miami Showroom. In this day-long seminar, key industry professionals explored the ever-changing industry and provided the necessary tools for success.

The first panel was entitled New Income Streams For Songwriters featured Jon McHugh, President/CEO Song Stew, Moderator; Luana Pagani, Artist Manager, Seitrack; Ruwanga Samath, songwriter (Beyonce, Ke$ha, Saw IV); Marc Stollman, Esq., Stollman Law PA and Cris Zalles, songwriter/producer (Chayanne, Luis Fonsi). The group discussed how Synchronization license opportunities continue to expand in film, television and Internet projects and how new opportunities related to social media and mobile technology continue to develop.

The second panel, In The Box with the Pros, moderated by Tom Morris, producer/engineer (Destiny's Child, The Dixie Dregs) and featured Greg “Stryke” Chin, DJ/remixer/engineer (Depeche Mode, Murk); Eric Schilling, GRAMMY/Latin GRAMMY/Emmy-winning engineer/producer (Madonna, Shakira) and David Thoener, GRAMMY-winning producer/engineer (Matchbox Twenty, Bruce Springsteen). This panel discussed the ways that work in different genres and formats is being done today. The event also featured a particularly unique angle as Schilling discussed his work as a music mixer for this year’s 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards.  He talked about and played back samples from the master live recording of Adele’s hallmark performance of “Rolling In The Deep” from the telecast.

The Third panel, Independent and Making It Work, moderated by Melanie Masterson, Artist Manager, Eleven:11  Entertainment, Inc. and featured Cuci Amador of Afrobeta; DJ Le Spam of Spam Allstars, artist/producer; Alvin Lee of The Lee Boys and Lolo Reskin, CEO, Sweat Records. The group explored how to make it work as an independent artist from all angles including marketing and distribution of recordings, touring, merchandising, promotions, use of social media, interfacing with the industry, and also the perspective of independent retailers and other professionals working on an independent basis.
