GRAMMY Career Day 2011 opened with Chapter Executive Director, Elizabeth Healy,  welcoming students from across New York City’s metropolitan region, imploring them to get as much out of the day as they could, get inspired, and have fun.   Healy recognized the tireless efforts of Committee Chair Ruby Marchand and Jill Krutick in restoring the day to a full program of discussions, workshops, and performances, rather recent year’s truncated version.  What followed for the students was a day to remember.

Trustee Scott Jacoby interviewed GRAMMY-winner Angela Hunte - Wisner, who struck the perfect chord for the day in telling the students that her GRAMMY Award-winning song “Empire State Of Mind” was built on 10 years of hard work, then, to everyone’s delight, sang the song.

A session titled “The Playaz” followed.  Lead by Barry Eastmond, two talented young songwriters were given a master class on the “other side” of writing a hit song.  Producers worked with each songwriter’s original demos, adding instrumental voices and production values; A&R and marketing people talked them through the next steps down their career paths.

The day continued with workshops:  In The Studio described creating the magic of a great recording; Role Players talked about unrecognized industry jobs; Scratch DJ Academy offered technique demonstrations and hands on experience with DJ equipment; other workshops looked at crafting hit songs, properly valuing your own material, sound checking prior to performances, and giving a great live performance.

Career Day 2011 certainly delivered in giving young artists the positive feedback and crucial guidance vital to enable them to build their own careers in the music industry.
