GRAMMY Professional Development Series:  In the Studio – The Art of the Craft

On Monday, Nov. 15, we headed out to Avatar Studios to kick off the first in a series of events presented in actual recording studios. Our first session started with six-time GRAMMY-winning producer/engineer Elliot Scheiner http://www.jdmanagement.com/elliotscheiner/ featuring the New York Voices http://www.newyorkvoices.com/ at the infamous Avatar Studios http://www.avatarstudios.net/

Elliot began with an open discussion about the microphones he uses for live recordings then segued into a live demonstration with the New York Voices, Peter Eldrige, Darmon Meader, Lauren Kinhan and Kim Nazarian, who were in the studio with Elliot recording their new Christmas album.  Joining the NYV’s were top notch musicians, Andy Ezrin (piano), Bob Mann (guitar), Paul Newinski (bass) and Marcello Pellittieri (drums).

Guests were encouraged to roam among the rooms within Studio A, including the Control Room, during the actual raw recording session. While in each of the booths, we were able to get an up close and personal feel and experience the various aspects of what goes into a live recording session. From what we have learned, live sessions are now far and few in between as we approach a new era of recorded music

The event concluded with a Q&A session where the technical aspects as well as the heart and soul of the music was discussed. Later on, we received an unexpected surprise visit from multi-GRAMMY winner - and Scheiner’s mentor - Phil Ramone, who happened to be recording a session in one of the other studios.

Be sure to join us in January at Stadium Red  http://www.stadiumredny.com/ for the second installment of the series presented by the Producers & Engineers Wing and GC Pro.
