Omega Studios in Rockville, Maryland, was buzzing yesterday evening with engineers, producers, and artists gathered for In the Studio: Music Production Software Tips & Tricks demonstration. Presented in partnership with the Washington, D.C. Chapter and the Producers & Engineers Wing, Ray Williams, the President of Music Marketing, Melodyne treated an eager audience to an interactive workshop on the latest and greatest in music production software.
Exploring best practices, creative techniques and practical production solutions for achieving desired sound quality through live demonstrations, the event was one not to miss. Musical talents Janine Wilson and GRAMMY U student Layal Brown lent their talents by recording a live vocal phrase. The vocal tracks were then imported in to Logic and Melodyne to demonstrate the visual dissection of the vocal sound. Delving in to the software toolbars and drop down menus, attendees participated in fine tuning the recorded vocals in to the sounds that they desired using methods to alter the notes, change the pitches through pitch drift and modulation, and transition notes. These tools demonstrated the software’s capabilities to tweak a recording or completely alter the recording to create a new sound. Demonstrations were also done to show that similar tools could be applied to alter instrumental recordings as well.
Through the demonstration one would easily be fooled that those with mediocre talent or studio recordings could be easily transformed in to a perfect recording but Williams emphasized that music software applications are merely an extension of musicianship with the unique capability of raising the standard of a recording. He reminded the audience that music software programs are still a computer program based on alithograms and the interface of the human ear is still needed just as the raw talent of the vocalist or instrumentalist to produce an authentic sound.
A special thank you to Ray Williams and John DeNosky from Music Marketing for offering their talents and expertise, Omega Studios for graciously opening their studio space and providing their expert engineers to assist with the event, and Janine Wilson and Layal Brown for their participation.
