The Role of Critical Listening and Evaluation in Quality Recorded Music
Massenburg will discuss the evolution of quality standards in recorded music since 1992 from three points of view: the technical, the artistic, and the "business model." Centering on demonstrations both of "loudness" and of what MP3s really sound like, the conversation will cover how a generation of listeners has grown accustomed to the destructive artifacts inherent to the badly-coded mp3 medium as well as the horrific "level wars" in mastering. Covered will be differences in the way that recordings are made, such as changes in production methodologies and the perception of a music recording's value, as well as the marketplace evolution from label-driven to artist-driven incentives and revenue concentration. Listenings of various classic and modern artists will compare and contrast as we explore the phenomenon of the 20-year de-evolution of the modern record business, the consolidation and buyouts of major labels from 1988-1992, and the resulting abandonment of substantive quality criteria.

About Rupert Neve (Keynote Speaker)
Neve learned about transformer design with specialist manufacturing companies and in 1961 he founded the NEVE Companies. Rupert designed and manufactured professional audio equipment for the Recording, T.V., Film and Broadcast Industries worldwide. The famous Neve consoles and module designs originated during these years including, for example, the famous 8078, 8068 consoles and the 1073 and 1081 modules. Following the acquisition of the Companies by Siemens of Austria in 1985, Rupert’s involvement ceased.
In 2005 Rupert founded Rupert Neve Designs Incorporated, based in Wimberley, Texas, with a new range of very high performance equipment. All the new designs retain his original transformer and EQ traditions but now incorporate circuitry to take account of new discoveries about the way we hear music. These include the PORTICO I and 2 ranges, the 5088 mixing console and a new range of microphones in collaboration with David Zou, owner of sE Electronics in Shanghai, China.
Neve was awarded a Technical GRAMMY in1997.
