After the establishment of The Recording Academy in Los Angeles, New Yorker John W. Griffin, then executive director of the RIAA, went to California to get advice on forming a New York Chapter. His challenge was to convince New Yorkers that the newly-formed Academy was more than a California organization. Because New York was a major center of the recording industry, it wasn't long before Griffin gathered many of the city's recording community leaders together to launch the New York Chapter in 1958.

The Chapter headquarters are located in the heart of Times Square with a southern view of Manhattan, Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. The New York Chapter makes its facilities available to many music and arts organizations, which enjoy the opportunity to use our conference room.

The New York Chapter has been at the forefront in developing events and initiatives to serve its music community. In 1995, the Chapter presented its first Heroes Awards, now known as The Recording Academy Honors. Important and accomplished members of the recording industry have been honored by the Chapter at this gala event. Funds raised have been used to grant scholarships and make charitable donations to support the Chapter's educational outreach efforts. The Recording Academy Honors has become a signature event Chapter-wide.

The New York Chapter also hosts MusiCares staff. A regional case manager is on-site and 24-hour assistance is available by calling .877.303.6962.

Each month, Chapter members and the music community at large can take advantage of the many educational, networking and other music-related opportunities and services that are presented by or in association with the New York Chapter, as well as member discounts.
