"A month and a half [or] two months into the recording process [for The Lion The Beast The Beat] I just put the breaks on everything. … There wasn't a heartbeat behind [the songs]. When I stopped the [recording] process I got in my car and drove for a month and just disappeared into the wilderness," said Potter. "I had an amazing experience where I just forgot about what the expectations [for] the record were and just got back to being a songwriter."
Inspired by the music of the late '60s and early '70s Potter's voice has been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. Potter and the Nocturnals self-released two albums, 2004's Original Soul and 2005's Nothing But The Water, before catching the interest of Hollywood Records. They subsequently released 2007's This Is Somewhere, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. Released in 2010, their self-titled album peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of songs such as "Paris (Ooh La La)" and "Medicine." In 2011 Potter earned her first GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "You And Tequila" with Kenny Chesney.
Released in June, The Lion The Beast The Beat was co-produced by Potter, GRAMMY winner Jim Scott and the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Of the album's 11 tracks, seven were written exclusively by Potter, including the title track, "Stars" and "Timekeeper." The album peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard 200.
